Face me properly!
"This is the place you had in mind?" Miura arched a brow as he surveyed the tacky decor.
"What's wrong with a private karaoke room? No one can listen in and it's cheap here." Takaki shrugged as he tossed his bag in a corner and sank into the old couch. He glanced up to see Miura still standing awkwardly by the door. "You gonna keep standing there?"
Miura approached cautiously and sat at the other end of the couch. The walk to this tiny establishment had been uneasy. Takaki had barely looked over his shoulder to check if Miura was following him down the maze of narrow back alleys. He was sure if Takaki didn't walk him out later, there wouldn't be a chance in Hell of him finding his way back to the main streets.
When they had finally arrived in front of a dirty tiny building with no signage to indicate what sort of business it might hold within, Miura started wondering if this was all such a good idea. He didn't really know what sort of connections Johnnys might have and for all he knew, yakuzas might be involved and this looked like the sort of place the shadier side of Tokyo's population would hang out in. So he had been surprised when the lift doors opened to reveal a small karaoke establishment. Takaki obviously must visit often, for the receptionist had simply slipped a key across the front counter to the small karaoke room at the end of the corridor.
A heavy silence descended between them as neither wanted to start the conversation both wanted to get out into the open.
They looked at each other, having spoken simultaneously and burst out laughing.
"You go first."
"You sure? You can go first."
Takaki grinned. "You're an idiot, you know that, right?"
"No more than you are," Miura responded cheerfully.
Takaki couldn't help smiling, even though he felt that tightness in his chest that marked his anxiety. Performing in front of the camera or at a concert never made him feel as breathless as this moment did.
"Look, if I had offended you last night, I wanted to apologise. I didn't mean to make you feel... uncomfortable."
"And what makes you think that?"
"You haven't exactly been jumping for joy when you saw me today."
"It's called acting, you idiot."
Miura chewed the inside of his lower lip nervously. The other boy had gone silent and hadn't moved a muscle, simply staring ahead at the flashing television screen that was currently playing some enka song on low volume.
Was he being too cryptic? His answer seemed to hang in the heavy air and if Takaki didn't give some kind of reaction - a smile, a angry shout, insane laughter... anything would be good at this point, Miura would go insane.
The enka song ended and some other song started to play. Miura was surprised when Takaki immediately picked up the remote control to increase the sound to an almost incomfortably loud volume and leapt from the couch to snatch the karaoke mic from its stand.
With mic in hand, Takaki spun on his heel and watched as Miura's expression of confusion was replaced by realisation - the song was Seishun Amigo – Shuji to Akira.
"鳴り響いた携帯電話 嫌な予感が胸をよぎる..." Takaki belted in perfect time to the music, without even looking at the screen. In fact, he was looking very intently at him as he swayed and danced to the song. Miura felt like a deer, hypnotised by approaching headlights and could only watch.
"SI 俺達は いつでも ２人で１つだった !"
Takaki's chest felt like bursting, so intent was his need to pour every emotion behind the words he felt best expressed how he felt. He knew he would never have the courage to confess in his own words, so music became his only solution. He silently thanked his sempais for this song and focused instead on giving the best to this private performance.
When the song finally ended, Takaki was breathless and found himself with his hand extended towards Miura.
Who looked extremely awkward.
"Erm... you must really like this song, eh?" Miura offered.
Takaki sagged, certain he had just made himself look like a complete idiot. Why the hell did he just sing and dance
in front of Miura? A Johnny song, no less. Suddenly dying on the spot didn't seem like a bad idea.
"Yah, I guess I do.", he replied unenthusiatically as he replaced the mic.
"You're pretty good though."
"The song's a little depressing."
"I think we could do better than that."
Takaki felt a hand rest softly on his shoulder. His heart pounded and his mouth went dry, as the hand slowly moved across his collarbone to wrap its attached arm and its twin across his shoulders in a hug. He could feel Miura's chest pressed against his back, almost feel the beat of his co-star's heart to match his own. But his body involuntarily stiffened at the close physical contact.
"Sorry..." He heard Miura whisper as the other boy began to pull away.
He quickly gripped Miura's forearms and shook his head. "No, it's ok. You can borrow my back if you want."
He swooned as the hug grew tighter and Miura's warm breath against his neck sent shivers down his spine. Tilting his head slightly, Takaki offered his shoulder and the other boy rested his chin lightly in the dip of his collarbone, his cheek pressed against Takaki's neck.
The pair stood still in the embrace, savouring the moment.
"You know, you suck at confessions." Takaki finally whispered into Miura's ear.
"Is that what you're calling this?"
"Isn't that what this is?"
"I don't know what this is," Miura confessed with a sigh.
"Then let's not call it anything. I just want to enjoy this time. With you."
Takaki gently coaxed Miura to release him and turned to face the other boy, cupping his cheeks in both hands.
"I want you to face me properly," Takaki said intently, forcing Miura to look directly into his eyes. "I want these to be good memories. Anything more is a bonus, but this is now. And the present is the most important time we have. Tomorrow is something we can worry about tomorrow."
"Then I should worry about this tomorrow."
And with that, Miura leaned forward to press his lips against Takaki's and with a hand on his waist, pulled the boy closer. Takaki, initially caught unawares, blinked in surprise, but was soon lost in the sensations and scent of the kiss. The world seemed to spin all around, yet time seemed to stand still betwen them.
When their lips finally parted, both were a little breathless. Takaki pressed his forehead against Miura's, a satisfied smile playing on his tingling lips.
"If I had known, I might have made my move earlier."
"You mean..." Miura's eyes widened in surprise.
Takaki leaned back and grinned cheekily. "If only you knew..." He answered cryptically with a wink.
"Oei...""Hey hey hey hey hey hey hey hey - SAY! ~♪"
"Oops, sorry..." Takaki smiled apologetically, as he wriggled out of Miura's grasp to rummage through his bag. "That's my mobile."
"Moshi mosh!... hai~! Yeah, I'll be right there... Mmm... ok ok, stop nagging!... okay. Ja!" The Johnny shut his phone and picked up his bag. "We gotta go. The others are waiting for us at the host club."
"Who was that?" Miura tried to ask casually as he picked up his own bag.
"Oh, just Junta-kun." Takaki shrugged as he checked that they had left nothing behind.
"Have you and Junta... you know... does he...?"
"Junta and me?!" Takaki looked in surprise as Miura nodded, before bursting out with uninhibited laughter. "You are
an idiot! Or blind. Next time, look carefully at Junta and
Takaki couldn't help grinning as once again, Miura's shocked expression of realisation made another appearance. He could really get used to this.
"Come on, let's go."
With that, Takaki reached to take Miura's hand and gave it a tight squeeze, before he led them both back out into the open and towards tomorrow.
