The SO's BYO BBQ Birthday Party
5th-Oct-2008 04:08 pm
Since moving back to Brisbane into our own apartment, we haven't organised our own party or really had many people over.

Yah, we're such hermits. (^___^)

So to celebrate the SO's upcoming 25th birthday (a quarter of a century!), I knuckled down onto Facebook and took a crack at putting up an event - a BYO BBQ party. Except I FAIL and put in 6am, rather than 6pm. The only reason I realised the mistake was cuz lorenai sent a message double-checking the time. Oops. (>_<)

People responded with yay or nay, and to be honest, I initially worried over if we'd have enough food. We spent much of Saturday morning and afternoon moving furniture around, getting groceries and preparing food: potato salad with homemade mayonnaise, tomato and egg salad, and kakiage.

The first arrivals were family and as the hour drew nearer, other people started flowing in, even the guys who were unsure if they would be able to make it. It was all good once the BBQ got fired up.

We got a whole Boston mudcake from the Cheesecake Shop for birthday cake, without candles. Mmmm... thick chocolate cake with icing. And there's only a tiny piece left over, which is awesome!

We don't have enough shot glasses, so our little Chinese teacups will just have to do. (^_-)-☆

I don't think I saw as much booze consumed in someone's home as we did last night (almost everyone brought their own 6-pack - Lew and dvoid lugged a carton of beer each for people), but everyone was well-behaved and apart from a few spills and one smashed cup, the conversation and laughter kept flowing well into the night.

The only person to crash on the couch from the night's festivities, which is pretty good considering the amount of alcohol consumed. Everyone had left by 1:15am, but he spent the night in the spare bed and got picked up in the afternoon after a breakfast of fresh coffee and lepeny.

Party and post-party chatter led to several conclusions:
  • Asian partners are apparently in vogue at the moment (we had 4 other inter-racial couples at the party).
  • Smaller people can be a lot more destructive to furnishings than those double their size & weight.
  • American politics is not a good conversation topic post-alcohol, especially if it involves Palin.
  • It is entirely possible to hand roll a cigarette of EPIC FAIL.
  • Phoning for cabs on the night of a massive music concert is about as possible as donkey eggs.

A great night, and even though there was massive cleanup of the porch area in the afternoon (got the hose out and detergent to scrub it down), it was well worth it. We should definitely do this again with the weather warming up so nicely.

Thank you guys for coming! (^0^)/
