In a few hours, the Olympics will begin and while there has been so much debacle over China's organisation of the event, we can only hope the games can still be fully appreciated by the rest of the world.

And the best way to watch any sporting event in front of the telly - with a large bowl of popcorn on your lap.

I'm not a huge fan of popcorn, cuz the ones at the theatres often have unpopped kernels. It's annoying to be munching away and almost cracking your teeth from biting into one of those little buggers. Not to mention how much sugar and butter most commercial brands drown the popcorn in.

But the SO has fallen in love with this popcorn stall at the West End markets, which is both salt and sweet. It really is quite good, but at $8 a large bag, it's still a ripoff. So I thought I'd try to make my own alternative, which is marginally healthier and tonnes cheaper.

INGREDIENTS
  • 30 ml vegetable oil
  • 155 g unpopped popcorn
  • 55 g butter, melted
  • 2 tsp hot paprika powder
  • 2 tsp cumin powder
  • 2 tsp salt, or to taste


DIRECTIONS
  1. Heat oil in a large saucepan or soup pot over medium-high heat. To test the heat, drop 1 kernel of corn to see if it pops. Once it's popped, add the rest of the corn kernels, and -this is the important part- place the lid on the pan. Shake to coat kernels with oil. When the corn starts to pop, shake the pan constantly until the popping stops. Remove from heat.
  2. Drizzle the melted butter over the corn if using, and sprinkle with paprika and cumin powders, and salt. With the lid on, give it all a good couple of tosses to mix it all up and serve in a large bowl.
