Queen's birthday long weekend
13th-Jun-2010 01:13 pm
winter
It's a long weekend in Queensland, cuz Monday is the Queen's birthday.

Well, not really.

See, this is one of those really weird things in Australia. The Queen of England is also the Queen of Australia, so it's fairly logical to celebrate her birthday since she's, you know, Queen. Which - by the way - is 21 April.

However, every state (with the exception of Perth and the rest of Western Australia) observes the Queen's Birthday on the second Monday in June.

Why? I don't know and most Aussies probably don't either.

But hey! Any excuse to kick back and enjoy a stubbie is good enough for everyone.

I actually recently discovered that the reason the Queens birthday is celebrated on the Second Monday in Juse was PR from the Royal House.
You see, the Brit's get the same holiday as us, and the reason it is, is because the Royals thought it'd be nice for their subjects to have a nice summer "day off" in name of their monarch. Sadly, because it's winter here, it's not too good beach or picnin weather lol. Still, it's a nice thought :)

Exactly, it's sort of lame, especially since Western Australia doesn't celebrate this day on the same day as everyone else too.

I wonder if people remember why we have half the holidays we do.

In Singapore, most kids are taught what the various holidays symbolised at school, since many of them were ethnic/religious ones. eg. Deepavali, Hari Raya Puasa, etc.

It's all part of the social conditioning to promote inter-racial harmony. Not that it has been successful in eradicating racism though.
